India South-west Monsoon - Uneven distribution

India’s Southwest monsoon recorded a strong turnaround in the month of Jul-22. On a cumulative basis by end Jul-22, rainfall clocked a surplus of 8% (vs. LPA) compared to a deficit of an equal magnitude as of end Jun-22. Kharif sowing has however picked up pace in Jul-22 albeit only for pulses, coarse cereals and oilseeds. Official acreage data for paddy, sugarcane and cotton has not been released for the last two weeks. Amidst sizeable rainfall shortfall in key rice producing states of Uttar Pradesh (-48%), West Bengal (-27%) and Odisha (-6%), paddy sowing is suspected to be lagging last year’s levels by a sizeable margin. As per an unconfirmed Government source, paddy sowing as of 29th Jul-22 stood nearly 13.3% lower on an annualized basis.
