The IMD expects Southwest monsoon season to receive ‘Above normal’ rains, at 106% of LPA (Long Period Average) with a margin error of +/- 5%. In terms of probabilistic distribution, IMD attaches a 90% probability of rainfall being ‘Normal’ or higher this year. Being the first Long Range Forecast, IMD will release an updated view towards end May-24 – i.e., just before the start of the season; which will be watched closely for any revision to this forecast, along with geographical and temporal distribution outlook. A normal monsoon will will help cool off food prices especially perishables and spur rural consumption.
